Lean Portfolio Management (LPM) is one of the five disciplines of SAFe. It connects strategy to execution across three functions: strategy and investment funding, Agile portfolio operations, and Lean governance.
A SAFe portfolio manages the flow of value across an organisation's Agile Release Trains, rather than approving individual projects. LPM funds long-lived value streams instead of temporary projects, with investment decisions made on a rolling cadence and priorities sequenced using Weighted Shortest Job First (WSJF).
A Lean Portfolio Manager is typically part of a small team, alongside executives and enterprise architects, who govern the portfolio and keep it aligned to strategy. SAFe's five lean thinking principles underpin the discipline: respect for people, flow, innovation, relentless improvement, and systems thinking applied at the portfolio level.
