SAFe Lean Portfolio Management with SAFe Lean Portfolio Manager (LPM) certification

Aligning Strategy with Execution using the Scaled Agile Framework

Become a Certified SAFe Lean Portfolio Manager and connect portfolio strategy to enterprise execution.

This course addresses the layer where most SAFe implementations stall: above the ART. Teams may be running PI Planning, delivering in sprints, and hitting velocity targets — while the portfolio above them continues to operate on annual budgets, project cost accounting, and approval processes that create overcommitment and slow everything down.

SAFe Lean Portfolio Management covers the three functions that govern a SAFe portfolio: strategy and investment funding, Agile portfolio operations, and Lean governance. The two-day course includes a third day — the Getting Started with LPM workshop — where participants apply the tools to their own portfolio context and build an implementation plan.

We offer public training online to make it accessible to clients across Australia and internationally. In-house classes can be arranged for corporations and government departments upon request. Contact us to arrange a quote.

Delivered by SAFe Fellows who are also SPCTs.

SAFe LPM was a great course for deepening understanding of portfolio level and how work makes it through to teams. If you're interested in the upstream view of work before agile squads start delivering on it, then I recommend it. I found it compliments the Leading SAFe course very nicely. And of course, it was great to have Em Campbell-Pretty and Adrienne Wilson as our guides over the three days. Their real-world experience helped bring the textbook to life.

A big "Thank you!" to Em Campbell-Pretty and Adrienne Wilson for the great coaching, instruction and accommodation - as always! Pretty Agile was able to support my learning goals through offering the virtual SAFe Lean Portfolio Management training (while they were in Australia) - an opportunity I was able to seize. I live in North America (Central time) and was able to alter my work schedule to take the course during the U.S. evening hours. Highly recommend Pretty Agile training. #tribalunity

Why train with Pretty Agile?

Most portfolio processes are good at approving work. Almost none of them are good at stopping it.

This course is taught by practitioners who have run LPM implementations in Australian and New Zealand enterprises. The scenarios, guardrails, and governance questions in class come from organisations working through the transition from project-based budgeting to value stream funding.

  • Delivered by SAFe Fellows who are also SPCTs and Certified AI-Native Trainers.
  • Australia's most experienced Scaled Agile Partner.
  • Trained 14,500+ people in SAFe since 2014.
  • 95%+ public course run rate.
  • 100% Australian-owned and operated.
  • Scaled Agile Platinum SPCT Partner.

Who Should Attend

This course consistently attracts people who own or influence portfolio-level decisions — regardless of whether their organisation is running SAFe. Portfolio managers, PMO and VMO leaders, finance business partners, and executives responsible for investment governance regularly attend alongside practitioners already working inside a SAFe environment.

LPM is one of the most broadly attended SAFe courses because the underlying problems — overcommitment, disconnected funding cycles, and lack of portfolio visibility — are not unique to SAFe organisations.

Common roles include:

What You'll Gain

After the course, you'll be able to:

  • Align funding decisions with strategic priorities so investment flows to the work that matters most.
  • Establish value stream budgets and Lean Budget Guardrails to replace project cost accounting.
  • Manage portfolio flow using the Portfolio Kanban and sequence Epics with WSJF.
  • Facilitate Participatory Budgeting and the LPM event cadence.
  • Design an LPM adoption plan using the six-phase implementation roadmap.
  • Assess portfolio health using Value Stream KPIs and identify where the system is creating overcommitment or delay.

Participants who attend both course days are eligible to sit the SAFe Lean Portfolio Manager (LPM) certification exam.

Course Overview

SAFe Lean Portfolio Management is a three-day program: a two-day certification course followed by a one-day Getting Started with LPM workshop.

The two-day course covers eight curriculum topics:

  • Introducing Lean Portfolio Management
  • Establishing Portfolio Strategy and Vision
  • Realising Portfolio Vision through Epics
  • Establishing Investment Funding
  • Managing Portfolio Flow
  • Applying Agile Portfolio Operations
  • Applying Lean Governance
  • Practising SAFe

The third day is a hands-on workshop where participants apply LPM tools — Portfolio Canvas, guardrails, Portfolio Kanban, and Participatory Budgeting — to their own portfolio context and develop an implementation plan.

Lean Portfolio Management (LPM) is one of the five disciplines of SAFe. It connects strategy to execution across three functions: strategy and investment funding, Agile portfolio operations, and Lean governance.

A SAFe portfolio manages the flow of value across an organisation's Agile Release Trains, rather than approving individual projects. LPM funds long-lived value streams instead of temporary projects, with investment decisions made on a rolling cadence and priorities sequenced using Weighted Shortest Job First (WSJF).

A Lean Portfolio Manager is typically part of a small team, alongside executives and enterprise architects, who govern the portfolio and keep it aligned to strategy. SAFe's five lean thinking principles underpin the discipline: respect for people, flow, innovation, relentless improvement, and systems thinking applied at the portfolio level.

Most portfolio processes are good at approving work. Almost none of them are good at stopping it.

LPM addresses three problems we hear from executives constantly: strategy that doesn't translate into what teams actually do, teams overloaded with too many competing initiatives, and investment decisions made without real visibility into what's actually delivering value. LPM gives you the tools — Portfolio Kanban, Lean Budget Guardrails, Participatory Budgeting — to fix all three.

The course runs three days: two days of certified LPM content, followed by a third day — the Getting Started with LPM workshop — where you apply the tools to your own portfolio and build an implementation plan.

SAFe Lean Portfolio Management is a three-day online course, delivered via Zoom, Mural, and Slack. Public classes run on a regular schedule across the calendar year.

In-house classes can be delivered online or in person, set in your portfolio context and run on your dates. Contact us to arrange a quote.

You have 60 days to take the exam online via SAFe Studio at a time of your choosing. Extensions are not available. If the first attempt is unsuccessful, a retake fee applies.

There are no mandatory prerequisites for the SAFe Lean Portfolio Management course. However, this course assumes participants have a working understanding of the Scaled Agile Framework. The following are highly recommended:

  • Familiarity with Agile concepts and principles
  • Attended a Leading SAFe course
  • Experience working in a SAFe environment

If you're working at the implementation level as well as the portfolio level, Implementing SAFe (SPC certification) covers the full implementation lifecycle: value stream identification, ART design and launch, PI Planning facilitation, and LPM — co-delivered over four days by two SAFe Fellows.

LPM also builds directly on Leading SAFe — most attendees have already completed it before this course. If you're coming from a Scrum Master or Release Train Engineer background, LPM is the natural next step up: it explains how the portfolio-level funding and governance decisions shape the work your ART or team already delivers.
