A value stream is the set of activities an organisation performs to deliver a solution to the customer, from initiation through to value realisation. In most organisations, active work accounts for less than half the total lead time — the rest is waiting. Hidden bottlenecks, delays and handoffs in the value stream are the reason ideas take so long to reach customers, and they're often invisible until someone maps them.
The SAFe Value Stream Mapping Workshop is a facilitated, collaborative session that measures the health of your current value stream, identifies the biggest bottlenecks, and produces an actionable plan to optimise it. It visualises the relationship between the operational and technical components of value delivery, and helps leaders see that removing functional silos, bottlenecks and delays directly improves your ability to deliver customer value, exceed business objectives and capitalise on market opportunities.
This is a focused engagement — keep core full-time participants to 8–11, with one representative for each major step in the value stream. Participants gather current-state metrics before the workshop, and a short 30–60 minute orientation beforehand helps set expectations and preview the activities.
This workshop pairs well with the Value Stream and ART Identification Workshop — identification first, then mapping to optimise.

What a value stream map reveals
A value stream map shows every step in your delivery process — the active work time at each step and the wait time between steps. In most organisations, wait time far exceeds active time. The example below shows a typical value stream where total flow time is 55 days but active work accounts for only 30 of those days, giving a flow efficiency of 54%. Value stream mapping makes those delays visible so you can target the biggest sources of waste.

Who should attend
A small, focused group with one representative for each major step in the value stream. Good candidates include:
- LACE representatives and other change agents, to support the implementation and help facilitate
- Executives and leaders with the authority to define and support ARTs that may cut across existing silos
- Business Owners and stakeholders who understand the flow of work in the operational value streams
- Technical authorities and development managers who can identify the impacted systems and the people working on them
Subject matter experts can attend or join select activities as needed. Ideally each participant has attended at least one SAFe course — typically Leading SAFe.
